How to record a Webex meeting on Mac (host, guest or no host)

By Harshit Maurya, maker of Cued · Updated 4 November 2026

If you're the host or a cohost, open the meeting in the Webex desktop app, click Record, choose the cloud or your computer, and click Record again; use Computer audio or the file will have no sound. If you're only a guest, Webex says you can't record yourself and should ask the host. With consent, you can still record your own Mac's screen and audio with a separate app that doesn't depend on Webex's permissions.

Who can record a Webex meeting?

Webex's help is clear: only the host or a cohost can record a meeting. If you're attending someone else's meeting, its cloud recording page says you can't record it yourself and should ask the host to record and share it with you. When the host isn't in the meeting, a cohost takes over the host role and can record.

Your company can narrow this further. In Control Hub, Webex administrators choose who may record to the cloud: hosts only, hosts and cohosts, or hosts, cohosts and participants. Recording to your computer only works if the site administrator has allowed it. So if you're the host and the Record button is greyed out or missing an option, it's usually a site setting, not your Mac.

Cloud recording or record on your computer: which plans allow which

Webex offers two kinds of recording. Cloud recordings are saved to your Webex site and show up in User Hub. Recordings on your computer are saved as a file on your Mac. Both are MP4 files.

Two limits matter on a Mac. Recording to your computer only works from the Webex desktop app, not the web app in a browser. And a meeting started by phone can't be recorded.

How to record a Webex meeting on your Mac as the host

  1. Join from the desktop app. Start or join the meeting in the Webex app for Mac, not in Safari or Chrome. Free accounts can only record from the desktop app.
  2. Use Computer audio. Webex says that to include audio you must pick Computer audio as the audio option. If you joined by phone audio, the recording has no sound, and Webex shows a warning.
  3. Tell everyone. Say at the start that you're recording and why. Webex's own pages say everyone taking part needs to give consent before a meeting is recorded, summarised or transcribed.
  4. Click Record and choose where. Click Record and choose the cloud option or the option for your computer. If you don't see Record, look under More. If the computer option is missing, your site administrator has turned it off.
  5. Start, pause and stop. Click Record to start. To pause, click Record and choose Pause, then Resume. Click Stop to end the recording. A recording indicator appears at the top right of your window while it runs.
  6. Find the file. A recording on your computer is saved to your Home folder by default on a Mac, which you can open in Finder, unless you picked another place. A cloud recording appears in User Hub under Recordings, and Webex emails you when it's ready.

Cloud recordings can take a while: Webex says it can take up to 24 hours before you receive one. If the meeting is linked to a space in the Webex app, the recording link also appears in that space.

What a Webex recording leaves out

Recordings on your computer are a video of the meeting, not a full archive. Webex says they don't include the chat panel, the participants panel, transcripts, or files shared with Share File, and you can't pick a layout. You also can't convert recordings on a Mac.

  • Chat: copy anything important out of the chat panel before the meeting ends.
  • Transcript: recordings on your computer have none. Cloud recordings can have one on paid plans where the admin turned it on; the Free plan has none.
  • Shared files: download them during the call, because they're not in the MP4.
  • Layout: cloud recordings let you choose a layout; recordings on your computer don't.

How to record Webex when you're not the host

Start with the simple route: ask. The host can record to the cloud and share the link, or make you a cohost so you can record yourself. Attendees who get a shared recording should look for an email from the host with a link, Webex says.

If the host isn't recording and you need your own copy, you can record what your Mac plays and hears with a tool outside Webex, as long as everyone agrees. Webex's permissions don't control these tools, which is exactly why consent is your job. Rules on recording calls differ between countries and between US states, so check where you and the other people are. This isn't legal advice.

Recording Webex with Cued: no host rights and no bot

Cued is a Mac app by an indie maker that records calls in Webex, as well as Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, FaceTime and Slack, when they start. ⌥R records any call by hand. It records the screen and both sides of the audio through the Mac itself, so no bot joins and it doesn't need the host's recording rights.

While you talk, it writes a live transcript of both sides on the Mac. Afterwards you get a summary with key points and action items and a drafted follow-up email you review and send yourself. ⌘K search finds things in plain words across every transcript, summary and file. Recording, transcription and summaries use on-device models and work offline; recordings stay in Cued's folder on your Mac and nothing is uploaded.

Be clear about the limits. Because no bot joins, nobody in the meeting is told automatically: say that you're recording. Transcripts are good, not perfect, and quiet, overlapping or noisy audio causes mistakes. Cued needs a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later, and it's made for MacBooks with a notch. It's a one-time payment, not a subscription: $19 for the first 50 founding members, then $49 with a year of updates, with a 7-day refund.

When the Record button is missing or the file has no sound

  • No Record button: look under More. If it's not there either, you're probably not the host or cohost, or your admin turned recording off.
  • No 'computer' option: recording on your computer is off for your site, or you joined from the web app. Rejoin from the desktop app or ask your admin.
  • No cloud option on a free account: cloud recording isn't on Webex Free. Record on your computer instead.
  • Recording has no sound: you weren't on Computer audio. Switch the audio option before you press Record next time.
  • Can't find the file: check your Home folder in Finder, or the folder you picked. Cloud recordings are in User Hub under Recordings, and can take up to 24 hours.
  • Meeting started by phone: Webex says these can't be recorded.

Questions

Can I record a Webex meeting if I'm not the host?

Not inside Webex, unless your admin lets participants record to the cloud. Webex says attendees should ask the host to record and share it. With everyone's consent, you can record your own Mac's screen and audio with a separate app instead.

Where do Webex recordings go on a Mac?

Recordings on your computer save to your Home folder by default, which you can open in Finder, unless you chose another folder. Cloud recordings are in User Hub (user.webex.com) under Recordings.

Can I record on the free Webex plan?

Yes, on your computer, from the Webex desktop app. Cloud recording and recording transcripts aren't available on Webex Free.

Why does my Webex recording have no audio?

Webex only records sound when you use Computer audio as the audio option. If you joined audio by phone, the recording is silent.

How long does a Webex cloud recording take to show up?

Webex says it can take up to 24 hours. You get an email when it's ready, and it appears under Recordings in User Hub.

Does a Webex recording include the chat and transcript?

Recordings on your computer don't include the chat panel, participants panel, transcripts or files shared with Share File. Cloud recordings can include a transcript on paid plans where it's turned on.
