How to record a Slack huddle on Mac (and get a transcript)
By Harshit Maurya, maker of Cued · Updated 7 November 2026
Slack doesn't have a button that saves a huddle as an audio or video file. On paid plans, Slack's AI notes can write a summary and, if your admins allow it, a text transcript into a canvas in the huddle thread. To keep the actual audio and screen, record your Mac with a separate app, and tell everyone in the huddle first.
Can you record a Slack huddle?
Not inside Slack, if by 'record' you mean a sound or video file you can play back. Slack's help pages for huddles, AI huddle notes and clips don't describe any way to save a huddle as a recording. What Slack does offer is text: AI notes with a summary and an optional transcript, plus the links, files and messages shared during the huddle, which Slack keeps in the huddle thread.
So there are really three different things people mean by 'recording a huddle', and each has a different answer.
| What you want | Can Slack do it? | How |
|---|---|---|
| A written summary and action items | Yes, on paid plans | AI notes in the huddle |
| A text transcript | Yes, on paid plans, if your admins allow it | Embedded in the AI notes canvas |
| An audio or video file of the huddle | No built-in way | Record your Mac with another app, with consent |
| A short recorded message instead of a live call | Yes, on every plan | A clip of up to five minutes |
What Slack's AI huddle notes save, and who can see them
AI huddle notes are Slack's closest thing to a recording. When someone turns them on, Slack writes notes into a canvas in the huddle thread: who was in the huddle, the topics discussed and the action items. If your admins permit it, a transcript is embedded in that canvas too.
- Plans: huddle notes are on paid plans. Slack's AI feature table lists them on Pro, Business+ and Enterprise+.
- Who can turn them on: members, but not guests. AI notes can't be used at all in huddles with external people or guests.
- Everyone is told: Slack says everyone in the huddle is notified when notes are started, stopped or cancelled.
- Who can read them: anyone in the channel or DM where the huddle took place. The canvas can be shared on like any other canvas.
- Search: the transcript is viewable in the canvas but doesn't show up in Slack search results.
- Admin control: in November 2026 Slack added a setting that lets owners and admins turn transcription on or off for AI huddle notes.
Live captions are a separate thing. Slack's huddle help says captions are only available in English and aren't saved once the huddle ends, so they don't work as a record of the conversation.
How to turn on AI notes in a Slack huddle on Mac
- Start or join the huddle. In the Slack app for Mac, open the channel or DM and click the headphones icon at the top of the conversation. Click the camera icon if you want video.
- Tell people first. Slack notifies everyone when AI notes start, but say it out loud too, especially if a transcript will be saved.
- Start AI notes. Click 'AI notes: Off' in the top left corner of the huddle, then click Start AI notes, then Start.
- Pause or delete if needed. Click 'AI notes: On' to stop or resume the notes. To throw them away, choose Delete AI notes, then Delete and cancel.
- Read the canvas. When the huddle is over, open the huddle thread in the channel or DM. The notes are in a canvas there, with the transcript inside it if your admins allow transcripts.
For a channel that huddles often, any member can make this automatic. Click the channel name, open Settings, and next to 'Always start AI notes' click Edit, tick the box to start AI notes for every huddle in that channel, and click Save. Admins can stop people changing this setting.
If you don't see AI notes at all, the likely reasons are: you're on the free plan, someone in the huddle is a guest or from another company, or an admin has switched the AI feature off under Feature access → AI in the workspace settings.
How to record a Slack huddle's audio and screen on a Mac
If you need the conversation itself, not a summary, record your Mac. These tools don't ask Slack for permission and don't show up in the huddle, so telling the other people is your job. Rules on recording calls differ between countries and between US states, so check where you and the other people are. This isn't legal advice.
| Tool | Screen | Your voice | Other people's voices | Transcript |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Screenshot app (Shift-Command-5) | Yes | Yes, pick a microphone under Options | Apple adds Include System Audio in macOS 27 or later | No |
| QuickTime Player, File → New Screen Recording | Yes | Yes, pick a microphone | Apple's QuickTime steps don't mention system audio | No |
| Cued | Yes | Yes | Yes, both sides through the Mac | Yes, made on your Mac |
- Open the Screenshot app. Press Shift, Command and 5 together. Choose Record Entire Screen, a window, or a portion of the screen.
- Pick your audio. Open Options and choose your microphone under Microphone. On macOS 27 or later, also choose Include System Audio so the other people in the huddle are recorded, not just you.
- Record. Click Record, then join or carry on with the huddle.
- Stop. Click the Stop button in the menu bar, or press Command-Control-Esc. The recording is saved to your desktop as a .mov file unless you picked another place under 'Save to'.
Without system audio, a screen recording only has your own microphone, so the other side of the huddle comes out faint or missing. And neither Apple tool writes a transcript; you'd have to transcribe the file afterwards with something else.
Recording Slack huddles with Cued: both sides, no bot, on your Mac
Cued is a Mac app by an indie maker that records calls in Slack huddles, as well as Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, FaceTime and Webex, when they start. ⌥R records any call by hand. It records the screen and both sides of the audio through the Mac itself, so nothing joins the huddle and it works whether or not your Slack plan has AI notes.
While you talk, it writes a live transcript of both sides on the Mac. Afterwards you get a summary with key points and action items and a drafted follow-up email you review and send yourself. ⌘K search finds things in plain words across every transcript, summary and file, including huddles from weeks ago. Recording, transcription and summaries run with on-device models and work offline; recordings stay in Cued's folder on your Mac and nothing is uploaded to Slack or anywhere else.
The honest limits: because no bot joins and Slack isn't involved, nobody in the huddle is told automatically, so say that you're recording. Transcripts are good, not perfect; quiet, overlapping or noisy audio causes mistakes. Cued needs a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later, and it's made for MacBooks with a notch. It's a one-time payment, not a subscription: $19 for the first 50 founding members, then $49 with a year of updates, with a 7-day refund.
Which option should you use?
| Your situation | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Paid Slack, internal team huddle, you only need decisions and to-dos | Slack AI notes |
| Free Slack plan | Record your Mac; AI notes aren't available |
| Huddle with a client, guest or another company | Record your Mac, with their consent; AI notes can't be used |
| You need to replay what someone actually said | A recording of your Mac's screen and audio |
| You want the transcript to stay off Slack's servers | A tool that records and transcribes on your Mac |
| It doesn't need to be live | A Slack clip of up to five minutes |
Clips are worth a mention because they solve some 'record a huddle' problems without a huddle. In a channel or DM, click the camera icon in the message field, pick a window if you want to share your screen, and click Record. Slack clips can be up to five minutes long, work on every plan, and can get a transcript with the Generate transcript button before you send.
Questions
Does Slack record huddles?
No. Slack's help pages don't describe any way to save a huddle as an audio or video file. On paid plans, AI notes can save a written summary and, if admins allow it, a transcript in a canvas in the huddle thread.
Can I get a transcript of a Slack huddle?
On Pro, Business+ and Enterprise+ plans, yes: turn on AI notes in the huddle, and if your admins permit transcripts, one is embedded in the notes canvas. It can't be used in huddles with guests or external people, and live captions aren't saved.
Do people know when Slack AI is taking notes in a huddle?
Yes. Slack says everyone in the huddle is notified when AI notes are started, stopped or cancelled, and that AI never takes notes unless someone in the huddle turns them on.
Who can see Slack huddle notes?
Anyone in the channel or DM where the huddle took place, and anyone the canvas is shared with later. The transcript inside the canvas doesn't appear in Slack search.
How long can a huddle be on the free Slack plan?
Slack's huddles page says the free plan allows two people and 30 minutes per huddle. Paid plans allow group huddles; Slack's help says up to 50 people, with up to 25 on video.
How do I record a Slack huddle with sound on a Mac?
Press Shift-Command-5, choose your microphone under Options and, on macOS 27 or later, Include System Audio so the other people are recorded too. Or use an app that records both sides of the call. Tell everyone first.
Try Cued on your next call. Your script in the notch, your call recorded and summarised on your Mac.
